Farewell Eugene!

It is with heavy hearts that we say farewell to Eugene Shen who has been a Parkour Instructor at Primal for over a year now. Almost anyone who has had a parkour class here would have been helped by Eugene at some point! He's now heading off for Taipei, and has already hooked up with the locals there to train and jam. Thanks Eugene for being one of the kindest most outgoing people we know, and thanks for all the Pocky!

Primal Barbell Club & The A-Team

A couple of announcements:

First off, as you're all well aware, strength is something we regard very highly at Primal Fitness.  It's benefits greatly carry over into all aspects of your fitness and we therefore make it a serious priority.  Now, thanks to Binhong Lu, our resident USA Weightlifting certified coach, Primal Fitness has an officially sanctioned weightlifting club.  Naturally, the below video is our official unveiling...

Next on the agenda, members of Primal's Affiliate Team left for Ohio yesterday to attend the Central East Regionals for a chance to compete in the 2010 CrossFit Games Affiliate Cup.  Nick, Ryan, Greg, ODB, Katie, and Sarah will be participating in three brutal team workouts on Friday.  And I'm not sugar-coating it when I say brutal.  Out of 32 teams, only the top 16 will qualify for Sunday's final event.  They have been training hard for several months and hope to put on quite a show - in matching outfits, of course.  You can follow their progress all day on this makeshift Twitter account Katie was gracious enough to create: http://twitter.com/teamprimal.  Best of luck, guys and girls!

RIP Amanda Miller

It is with very heavy hearts and deep sadness that Primal Fitness must say goodbye to Amanda Miller , who passed away last Friday from melanoma.  She was 24.

For those that do not remember, Amanda and Christy Phillips were frequent training partners in preparation for last year's CrossFit Games.  Here is a video of them training together.  Amanda finished 55th overall.  Amanda's amazing athleticism was overshadowed by her determination, will, and spirit.  Amanda fought this disease until the bitter end and she embodied the qualities that everyone should aspire to demonstrate day by day.  She will be greatly missed by all of us and by the entire CrossFit community.

First Annual SBNation Blogger Olympics

Views : 273

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure to run the second half of the SBNation Blogger Olympics. After their first night of competing at bar games we ran them through a variety of physical tests to test strength, agility, speed and endurance. Surprisingly enough (considering they are a bunch of guys who get paid to sit in front of computers all day;) it was an impressive competition. Read more and see the video on SBNation here: http://www.sbnation.com/2010/4/12/1416620/sb-nation-blogger-olympics

A big thanks to Spencer Hall for organizing the blogger side of the event. Can't wait for next year's !

WASHINGTON - A traffic nightmare that could give new meaning to the term "gridlock" is just a week away from reality in the nation's capital.

A Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) that will bring nearly 50 heads of state to D.C. is scheduled to take place April 12-13. It's expected to be one of the largest gatherings of heads of state in history.

The Greater Washington Board of Trade has sent out a note to its members noting they "anticipate significant disruption due to congestion" related to the summit.

The D.C. Department of Transportation says road closures, no parking areas and changes to public transportation routes and public works services will be necessary during the NSS.

Road Closures

The following roads will be closed from approximately 10 p.m. Sunday, April 11 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13:

  • New York Avenue NW, eastbound and westbound from 6th Street NW to 7th Street NW and 9th Street NW to 11th Street NW;
  • K Street NW, eastbound and westbound from 6th Street NW to 7th Street NW and 9th Street NW to 10th Street NW - Traffic will be allowed to run eastbound and westbound on K Street NW between 7th Street NW and 9th Street NW but will then be diverted southbound on one of those two streets;
  • Massachusetts Avenue NW, eastbound and westbound from 9th Street NW to 11th Street NW;
  • L Street NW, eastbound and westbound from 6th Street NW to 10th Street NW;
  • M Street NW, eastbound and westbound from 6th Street NW to 10th Street NW;

  • 9th Street NW, northbound and southbound from O Street NW to New York Avenue NW;
  • 10th Street NW, southbound from L Street NW to New York Avenue NW;
  • There will be intermittent closures of other intersections in the vicinity of the Convention Center that will temporarily affect vehicular and pedestrian movement.

Pedestrian traffic inside the restricted areas will be limited to residents and employees of local businesses that fall within the secure area.

Parking

Parking restrictions will be enforced from Sunday, April 11 at 7 p.m. to Wednesday, April 14 at 12 p.m.:

  • 7th Street NW from Massachusetts Avenue NW to O Street NW;
  • 8th Street NW from N Street NW to O Street NW;

  • 12th Street NW from H Street NW to I Street NW and K Street NW to L Street NW (1150 mid-block);
  • 13th Street NW from H Street NW to I Street NW and the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue NW;

  • I Street NW and intersection of 11th Street NW;
  • Rhode Island Avenue NW (1100 block - Connecticut Avenue NW, including Logan Circle) from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, April 12 and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13.

Public Transportation

The Mt. Vernon Square (7th St-Convention Center Metrorail Station, Yellow and Green Lines) will close on Sunday, April 11 at midnight and will reopen at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, April 14. Trains will be able to pass through the station, but passengers will not be allowed to access the station.

Metro Access will not be able to provide paratransit service within the security zone.

Thirteen Metrobus routes are expected to be impacted: 42, 63, 64, 70, 71, 79, 80, D4, G8, P6, S2, S4, and X2. Metrobuses will continue to operate; however, with street closures around the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, those buses will be detoured. Specific Metrobus detour information will be available on Metro's website.

Metrobus riders whose routes are impacted by the street closures should plan for their bus trips to take a significant amount of additional travel time starting at 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 11. Regular Metrobus service is expected to resume the morning of Wednesday, April 14.
