Only a couple of days to go before the DC's Most Primal Competition, I hope you are all as excited as we are!
First things first, I'm going to release the info for event number 1 today. There are two reasons for this, first is that it will allow everyone to put just a bit of planning into their approach for the next few days before the competition, and second is that it will help us run the first event as quickly and smoothly as possible. Both of these will make things a bit easier on the day, which will be good because this should be the longest of the 3 events. So, without further ado...event number 1: Click the article title link for more...
"Overhead Anyhow" This event will essentially consist of taking the heaviest weight that you can, from the ground to overhead, in any method you are comfortable with. This could be a clean and jerk, a clean and push press, and continental clean and push press, or even a snatch (if you're a beast) just a couple of rules will apply:
1. The bar begins at a dead stop on the ground, and the movement is finished when the bar is held overhead with elbows, knees, and hips fully extended and the feet parallel between hip to shoulder width.
2. The bar cannot contact any portion of a lifters face or head, or the lift will not count.
3. The athlete will have 15 seconds to complete the lift from the point that the bar leaves the ground. If the lift is not completed in the fashion stated in rule #1 before the allotted time is up, the lift will not count (i.e. if it gets overhead but the elbows or knees aren't fully extended by the time 15 seconds is up, the lift will not count)
4. Once the bar leaves the ground it cannot drop back below the level of the knees. Any other stopping, hitching, etc. will be allowed as long as the lift is completed within the allotted time.
5. Once the bar is locked out overhead and the feet, knees, and hips are in position the lifter must wait for the "good lift" signal from the main judge before dropping the weight.
4. The lifter will get 2 attempts at a max weight. Each lifter's first attempt will be stated at the weigh-in time, and can be changed within 2 minutes of their upcoming first attempt. The bar will start at the lowest stated attempt weight and weight will be added in a linear fashion as the session goes on until all lifters have made 2 attempts. Once the chosen weight is loaded the lifter has 1:00 to start their attempt. Each lifter must state their second attempt weight before the weight on the bar is changed to a higher weight.
5. The event will be scored based on a relative strength formula that takes into account bodyweight, age, and gender. The caculator we will be using can be found here: http://tsampa.org/training/scripts/relative_strength/ This calculator takes into account a number of useful strength formulas, and though it's not perfect, it gets pretty close to normalizing a field of lifters with varying body types.
6. The following personal equipment will be allowed: Olympic weightlifting shoes, Belts, Knee sleeves, wrist wraps. All equipment must conform to USAW rules and regulations, which you can find in section 4.2 here: http://weightlifting.teamusa.org/assets/documents/attached_file/filename/4688/USAW_TECHNICAL__DOPING_RULES_as_of_November_2008.doc So, come prepared!
